A Weekend In Birmingham + A Life Update

Happy Monday! I have been so excited to share this post. You may have seen on my Instagram stories, but Jake and I were in Birmingham for most of last week. The reason we were visiting is we were house shopping. The real estate marketing is hot right now in Bham, so we didn’t want to miss out by waiting too long. We already lost several listings we loved that we saw online after he matched.

Life lately has been such a whirlwind after Jake matched 3 weeks ago. I’m excited to announce we bought a house on Thursday! I thought about waiting until we closed to share, but I couldn’t wait and Jake already announced it on Facebook (he always beats me to the punch since he can just announce stuff without writing a whole blog post!).  We did the house inspection on Friday and everything came out good except some minor things. The next step is closing soon, and then we will officially be Birmingham residents. This house is super special to us because it’s the home we plan to bring our first child home from the hospital in a year or two.

About The Photo Location:

These photos were actually taken right in front of our new neighbor’s home right before we got the call from our realtor saying she heard from the listing agent that an offer had just been put in by someone else, so we needed to put a competitive offer in if we wanted it. We are so excited to be in a beautiful, historic neighborhood with tons of huge old trees. Jake and I both kept saying the whole trip how beautiful Birmingham is. OKC is very flat, so it will take a while to get used to the huge trees everywhere. There are also azaleas everywhere. Our neighborhood in particular seemed to have a lot of them, which was definitely something that sold me on the neighborhood.

We were both looking for something completely different in a house, but we came to a compromise. That is what marriage is all about! We both agreed on wanting a close location to the hospital he will work at. Our OKC house is kind of in the suburbs and we always had wished we were closer to downtown, so this will be awesome. Many times we didn’t end up going to what we wanted to do and instead just did something closer to home because we didn’t want to spend the time and/or Uber fee it would take to go to downtown OKC. That definitely shouldn’t be a problem at our house in Bham! There is a really cool district that we can walk to from our new house, and downtown is less than 3 miles away.

Jake wanted something with more square feet and a garage (which is not always easy to find in an older home which is what mostly we were looking at). He got his wish with a basement. For me, newly renovated bathrooms and a white kitchen was non-negotiable.

Our new home is completely different from our very traditional OKC home. It kind of reminds me of a bachelor pad/penthouse suite/loft vibe with the completely open layout in the main room/kitchen. The house was built in the 50s and has the original hardwood floors, which I find charming. I also got my white kitchen cabinets that I have been wanting for years! Right now, the kitchen is more on the rustic side, so I have several projects in mind to make the kitchen more my style (new gray paint to match the rest of the house, new light fixtures, and new backsplash). The rest of the house is perfect and won’t need any remodels. I cannot wait to share pictures once we move and get the minor renovations done. Our move in date is still unknown, but it will be sometime in late May or early June.

Jake and I are faithful that we are going to love Birmingham. We definitely enjoyed all of the amazing food this week. I still cannot believe we have a home there!

Thank you so much! The azaleas are probably one of my fav parts about our neighborhood. Everyone does a good job with keeping up with their yards.

I cannot wait to share my pics.

And I had to laugh about Jake announcing it on Facebook…my husband and I have come to an agreement to wait until I can get a blog post together recently. Ah, the life of a blogger husband, haha.
