Scarlett’s First Haircut: Pigtails & Crewcuts

Thank you to Pigtails & Crewcuts for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the businesses that support A Byers Guide.

Recently Scarlett got her first haircut and I wanted to document it. Getting a first haircut is a little intimidating, especially for the mama. Scarlett is 21 months old and I had no idea when we should get her hair cut. She still doesn’t have all of her hair on the sides, but the back was getting really long. She was starting to have a mullet going on. We joked that she looked like Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State’s football coach)! My mom suggested we get the back trimmed to even things out. Scarlett only got the back ends trimmed and it made such a difference. Her hair looks much more feminine again and is now even and much cleaner looking. Every mama is different about when they decide to get their little one’s first haircut, but I’m so glad I went ahead and did it now. We went to Pigtails & Crewcuts in Vestavia Hills and had such a wonderful experience. We will be back again soon!

Our Experience:

Pigtails & Crewcuts now has two locations in the Birmingham area, and we went to the Vestavia Hills location since we are much more familiar with this area. The Vestavia location is in the Vestavia City Center’s Shopping Center. It’s the perfect spot to make a fun afternoon and go get lunch at Taco Mama or Zoe’s Kitchen after, and to also swing by Crumbl Cookies like we did. We had an absolutely fantastic experience from the moment we walked in. We did have an appointment, but walk-ins are welcome too. I was a little nervous how Scarlett would do with her haircut because she literally never sits still. When we got there, they had a spot waiting for us. They have special toddler sized haircut chairs to put the little ones in with a little booster seat and seatbelt to keep them safe. They had a firetruck, train and police car chair for the kids to sit in. Scarlett was a big fan of this!

They also had a kid appropriate movie playing which was great to keep Scarlett calm and distracted. The little chair also had a steering wheel with little magnetic toys and Scarlett was extremely interested in that. She was distracted and did AMAZING during her hair cut. The lady who cut her hair was so good with children, you can tell that everyone who works there loved children and knew how to interact with them making them feel comfortable.

We did the “first haircut package” and I recommend that for the first time. The package includes a sweet photo of her after the haircut that they printed for us, a locket of her hair, and a keepsake card. The picture and lock of hair are in her baby book for safe keeping. We got the cutest smile in her photo! Scarlett also got to pick a little toy from their treasure chest after her cut. Her hair looks so good! I am so happy for our experience and will be back before we move. They also offer cuts from the entire family, so this is a great idea to get it all done at the same time. I will have to try this next time! I am also glad that I didn’t wait until she grew the sides of her hair in; her hair was getting unmanageable and now looks much better. You can tell from the photos that she really enjoyed her experience.

Pigtails and Crewcuts is very kid friendly and they have a little play area for the children. This would be perfect if you’re bringing siblings so they could play while the other is getting a cut. They also have a retail area with hair products, toys, and bows. You could get your little one a stuffed animal to make the day extra special. One of my favorite things about the salon is the giant wall of Wee Ones bows. We just started collecting these bows and they’re AMAZING. So worth it! Unlike the inexpensive Amazon ones, they really hold up and are so adorable.
