3 Years Of Marriage

wedding photo ideas | wedding photos | wedding stories

As I reflect back on 3 years of marriage, I can’t believe how fast it’s gone. Today is our 3rd wedding anniversary and my hubby’s 27th birthday. I am so lucky to have someone so selfless that they would give up their birthday to marry me. Just thinking about our marriage gets me emotional. Marriage has been nothing but a blessing, even during the hardest times. My hubby just finished his 3rd year of medical school and starts his 4th next Monday. I cannot believe that he’s so close to being a physician! 3rd year was challenging to say the least. There were rotations where he would get home and need dinner immediately because he would have to go to bed at 8 p.m. so he could wake up again at 3 a.m. Even during the stressful times, I am thankful to have someone I enjoy doing life with! I am looking forward to what the 4th and final year of medical school brings. It feels like an never ending journey, but we both can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Of course I couldn’t do a post about our wedding without sharing lots of pictures! It was definitely like a fairy tale.

What Marriage Has Taught Me/My Advice:

Being married to a medical student is not a walk in the park. I used to compare us to other newlyweds that are able to hang out all night after work and all weekend, and it drove me crazy. With Jake being in medical school, he has to spend many nights and weekends studying or at the hospital. I have learned to be independent, which has been really good for me. It also has helped me appreciate every free moment that my hubby has. I am so protective of his free time and I don’t take it for granted. I am thankful I started this blog and Instagram page as a hobby because it’s given me such purpose when he is so busy.

One of our goals in our pre-marriage counseling session with our preacher was to make time for a date night every week. This can be hard, but even if it’s cooking a dinner at home that is just a little nicer than normal, we make time for a weekly date night. We also like to do little things for each other. My husband is so busy and when he does the dishes or hand washes my coffee tumbler it makes my day. I always make sure to let him know how much I appreciate it. Jake loves the little things, like when I surprise him with donuts.

Jake: “It’s crazy how fast time flies when you’re having fun. While it seems like I’ve been in medical school for 74 years, it seems like just yesterday that I was finally getting to marry my soulmate. Like Courtney said, me being in medical school makes things a lot different for us than most other couples. I’m frequently seeing friends from outside of medical school getting to go places every weekend while I have to work 6 days a week and spend most of my free time studying for the never-ending tests. It really makes me appreciate the free time we do get to spend together, and I don’t know how I could have made it this far in medical school without Courtney. She cooks for me almost every day and keeps our house from becoming condemned; without her, I would probably just eat Arby’s every day and the house would look like a toxic waste site. But even more than that, she keeps me sane. I’m lucky to be able to come home every day to someone I genuinely enjoy every minute hanging out with.
Now that we’ve finally made it through what should be the worst year ever in terms of my career (residency will certainly be tough at times, but 3rd year is the worst), I’m glad we finally get a year to basically just enjoy ourselves and be like a regular couple again. My first couple months of 4th year will be busy, but then after that, we’ll have about 9 months of pretty much nothing but getting to travel, go to OSU football games, and do so much stuff that just wasn’t possible the first 3 years. Courtney has been an absolute life saver and the greatest wife I could have asked for, and I’m so excited that I’ll finally have a schedule with lots of free time. She’s worked so hard and deserves to finally get to be a regular couple again.”

Happy Anniversary! Such a lovely post Courtney! I can absolutely relate to the struggle of being married to a med student, but I love seeing how the two of you make it work! While it is definitely challenging at times I think it definitely does create a stronger sense of appreciation for one another! Hope you have a lovely time celebrating and many more years of happiness!
